Spread the love

This month, I would like to pay tribute to women in technology. My love for computers was influenced by my high school computer science teacher Ms. Kepka. Being the only young woman of color in my computer class, I was grateful for Ms. Kepka investing in me and allowing me to explore and discover everything I wanted to know about computers. Once I discovered what a MAC computer could do, I was hooked for life. And now, four decades later, the seed that Ms. Kepka planted has helped pave the way for me to have a rewarding career in Web development, digital asset management and social media management.

So, I salute you, Ms. Kepka, for making a difference in my life and countless other students. I also want to recognize the following women of color for being trailblazers in technology. Some of these fierce women below have founded organizations that help young girls pursue careers in science and technology. Others have shaped the tech world, from artificial intelligence to internet infrastructure.

  1. Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson (born 1946) – A theoretical physicist and the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. from MIT. Her research in telecommunications led to the development of technologies like touch-tone phones, fiber optics, and caller ID.
  2. Dr. Radia Perlman (born 1951) – Though often overlooked, Perlman, who is of mixed heritage, revolutionized networking with her creation of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), a fundamental part of the internet’s infrastructure.
  3. Kimberly Bryant (born 1967) – An electrical engineer and founder of Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to increasing the representation of Black girls in STEM fields.

Look around! There may be a woman or young girl in your life who is passionate about technology. You never know…they might just change the world for the better. Take a moment today and encourage them to follow their dreams!

Be well,

Lenora

LET’S Talk Number! A Featured Article on the BOSS Network for Women’s History Month!

Let’s talk about wasted time. The average employee spends 20% of their workweek—that’s over 8 hours—just searching for files. Imagine losing an entire workday every single week just trying to find the right document, image, or video. That’s valuable time that could be spent on innovation, strategy, and revenue-generating activities.
